Kaakuluk Polar Bear
I had the pleasure of doing another commission for the Kaakuluk Kid’s Discovery Magazine. This years contribution was significantly easier than the previous years’.
No commentsThe Ball rolls once more.
A few things have been happening as of late. To start I’ve recently gone in and done a major overhaul of the artwork adding in process for most of the creatures and a variety of touchups here and there.
Next up I have by first published work for the Kaakuluk, Nunavut’s Discovery Magazine for Kids as a two page interior spread. As a first experience with having to work with both an art director and a cultural adviser it was pretty interesting and went relatively smoothly. The final piece was a bit taller and had floating caribou parts awaiting integrated design work which I’ve removed from this version. The illustration is of a traditional hunting scene involving an Inuit tribe showing all the ways that Caribou are used within their society from food to tools.

Thought it would be a fun to try and redesign the Big Daddies from Bioshock with a bit more of a modern take. I tried to keep some of the basics of the character the same while adding a bit of an extra flavor. The tesla coil seems kind of impractical but seemed like a neat modern/futurish weapon that could be tacked on – possibly used for over the top welding? Working on the little sisters next and possibly a big sister since i detest their new design so very much…

SKYWHALER
Well, here’s the explanation for me being MIA the past month and a half. This is the final split between 3 classes and was done with the aid of several Bioware employees offering crits. The proposal was for a game that would allow you to fly around in giant zeppelins and hunt `Skywhales` for their magical blubber, specifically a moby dick esque one that has recently killed your father. This would eventually lead to your facing off against the REAL villain who’s an insane Greenpeace nut who’s been manipulating the whales to become more aggressive. Enjoy.

The main character, with his uber functional outfit ready for skywhale boarding.

The Greenpeace villain Charlotte, who`s become infected with the genetic modification material that the Crabmen (yes from the previous project) used to modify the worlds` jellyfish creatures. So she`s slowly becoming a jellyfish-human hybrid while totally losing her mind.

This is Charlotte fully mutated into her final monster form and one of the crab man militia.

The jellyfish that fly around, land on ships and stomp on dudes in order to ingest them.

A Skywhale with ship size comparison. This was the last thing I did for the project character wise – rushed this out the door in 2 days. Really had to push these guys hard and fast in order to make them interesting and make them not `too` whalish. So they ended up being a bizzare combination of whales, dinosaur head bones, porcupines, elephants, sloths and traditional Japanese dragons combined with colors reminiscent to tropical creatures like poisonous frogs.

And the environments… For the interiors i wanted to do banal areas in which the main character could talk to the crew to increase moral and learn about back stories and possible locations to travel to or explore ingame. The interiors are of the engine room and the ‘Helium Ballast room’.

With the exteriors I thought it would be interesting to show an overview of the blimp as its docking with one of the sky-cities and then some cool perspective for a dramatic whale sitting as a crew member repairs one of the Zeppelin’s engines. I actually forgot to save the final version of the last one there so I’ll be reuploading this one later.
Kids book covers
Here’s the two kid’s book covers- both have turner out quite good so I’ll post the two of them. For the two of these i decided to choose similar books to mimic in the layout and design. For the Lobster Dragon, since it is naturally a parody of Harry Potter i thought it would be appropriate to model the book after that series. As for the Oedipus book, Mike Mignola served as a major influence and i tried to work with alot of allusions to insinuate what would happen to the guy in the book.
These were actually put together as full book jackets though I’ll only post the covers since they were the only areas that were illustrated. Enjoy.
Oidipus Interior Illustration
Here’s an interior illustration for the Oidipus story line – credit also goes to Cristy for the typography and Andy for the writting – thanks again guys.

Maharaja
Time for something a little “weird”. Illustrating a creepy, emaciated Maharaja being attended by children is a first for me. Tried something a little different this time illustrating children (which i never do) and focused alot on lighting effects which wouldn’t be defined by brush pen but by color. It was strangely relaxing to go back to doing lots of detail in a piece – even if it was all digital. I might go back into this one when i get back post surgery, but for now this is the temp final.
This now marks the last project of this semester. See you guys in January – unless we decide to post some hilarious left hand drawings.
Tis be the end of the semester, so here’s a ‘chunk’ of that wendigo /forest spirit comic i was working on for the past few weeks. It was enjoyable – though i think i’ll go back in and redo it differently with more limited colors, or none at all. We’ll see – time depending. Plus this is only eight pages of about seventeen.

On another note, we’re disabling commenting since we’re being hit so hard by the creepy porn spammers.
Here Comes a big one…
Lots of stuff to show from school, first off is gonna be the part of the grand-seven week storyboarding project. I chose to do Andrew and mine`s slowly cooking story Falling Man. For some reason we were supposed to color and detail the frames – god knows why. Anyways, here`s the climactic end battle of the movie in which are hero battles the multi-armed villain without either of their powers, and it ends being really nasty. Hope you guys don`t mind blood… and yes. he`s stabbing her in the throat with his broken bone.

And here`s the mockup for the movie poster. Nice and dark. One man against all the odds.

Next up are the character sheets for Molmar, the suicide bomber mole rat who I`ve yet to have made an interesting back story for yet. Though he seems pretty straight forward to me.

Last but not least we have an illustration project that i hammered out in a single day. I really liked the potential with this one so I`ll be going in and redoing elements very soon to make it a portfolio piece maybe.

And now, I get to start on the Wendigo/Forest Spirit comic that I was originally planning to work on in my total lack of free time as a project – so i`ll see if i can keep updating with progress shots of that as i plug away at it.
More Thingses
Larger update for you this time. First off, I simply had to do a bunch of large scale editing on the Champagne Woman piece after forgetting that little trick of flipping in order to check for consistency. Anyways, this will be the final adjusted version:

Next up is another update for that side project Andrew and I are collaborating on – we’ll have to come up with a codename for the project soon enough. This will also begin to morph into the game proposal/development project that I’ll get to work on as an in class assignment starting in January. The next character we’re looking into is Lt. Balanus. Balanus is of a race of ocean dwelling creatures who are somewhat out of their element on dry land as they need to remain hydrated at all times. The extreme cold that Balanus has to deal with while at high altitudes is made bearable thanks to her full body survival wetsuit which keeps her body at a constant temperature. To try and play up on the idea that she owes her heritage to crustaceans she also sports a thick armor overtop of her suit which acts as protection for her environment suit and any other dangers that may arise. She’s also able to use her shell-armor to retract most of her body into, much like a snail. We’ll start with the thumbnails I did over a few days which evolved over constant discussion.

And the final colored version.

Last of all, I found the time to render up a land-jellyfish which I’ve been meaning to do for quite some time. I’m really happy how this one turned out.

Taster
Well this is a relief. I’ve been plugging away at this one on and off for the past couple months and its just about done i think. Any final suggestions or changes ill take into account here and call it a wrap. This is meant to be a companion piece for the Martini Player piece i did about a year and a half ago. Turned out much cleaner than it’s double, oh well. Thanks again for your thoughts and suggestions.
