And so approaches the end of another year…

Wow what a crazy past few months. Andrew, Steve and I have been having to juggle some crazy website issues ranging from being hacked on Halloween (and a couple times after) then the reemergence of the spam bots on our comment service. So commenting has once again been disabled until further notice sadly…

In other news i just realized that it has been almost 4 months since I last post something. yikes, how time flies. But I’ve still been drawing, in fact learning tons taking a few courses while working full time. Since September I’ve taken to trying to learn anatomy which i foolishly neglected back in school. Here’s a slew of posts from these classes and my sketchbook.

Also I’ve updated the website with these and some minor organizational items.

I’ll try and do some actual finished work before the year is over. Thanks for watching so far everyone.

Poop

This post is a bit all over the map. It starts with a finished version of a capitol ship i sketched in an earlier post, then a completed turn around that i had 1/2 done for school for a run cycle (hooray cartoon characters). A couple of in progress characters I’ll be pushing further and rendering out in the next couple weeks to boot then we have a study of the work of Sargent I think I’ll be doing more of these master studies to work my colors further… Then there’s my bus/lunch break sketches for the month, enjoy.

WCB = lots of progress on stuff

I’ve been pretty busy the past few days courtesy of being kept off work thanks to a self inflicted fractured toe – HIGH FIVE! But seriously. I was able to go back to a few projects I’ve had on the back burner or have been meaning to start up. So here we go. To start I’ve decided I’m STILL not done with the big daddy redesign and may even have a couple more beyond this to go and have started on the back view – I’ll post that in the coming weeks. Anyways in the new version the pincer arm is now fixed up to be more bad ass and the weird part of his left arm above the gun has been tubified.

Remember that horrible spaceship i whipped up to try and apply to bioware with? It was pretty sloppy and I’ve been milling over a redo of it for awhile now. So I took the time and sleeked it out into a cooler starship. It still retains some reference to Mass Effect ships – but made sexier…

Also if there’s one thing my portfolio is seriously lacking at the moment its women. So here’s another prelim sketch I’ve started for the heroine of the sol-fungus story. She’s a military trained translator who belongs to the human survivors of the epic ‘sol-fungus’ incident in which a self replicating biological singularity occurs on earth and devours the solar system. Armor and such is kept to a minimum but features a pressure suit/flak jacket combo just in case things get crazy.

And here’s a bunch of sketches from my joyous bus rides downtown to work every day.

Environment speed paintings

If there`s one thing i need to start working on its color for environments. So I`ve started an attempt at one to two speed paintings a day, when i have time. These are all done from photo ref between 40 minutes and an hour. I`m trying to train my eye to recognize and choose colors without having to use the eye dropper – though i did cave in a few times… More of this speed painting stuff will follow soon – with the ultimate goal being 15-20 minutes per.

Falling Man Storyboard tease

Here’s a little taste of a long term project I’ve been working on for my storyboarding class. As I started coloring the 18 frames I adjusted the coloring style to more of a cell-shaded animated show look in order to save time and avoid rendering. Unfortunately this was done 8 frames in so i have to go back over the older ones (which were rendered). Seems to be going well so far, I’ll post the whole thing here when its done in another week and a bit. Anyways, here’s a couple scenes shots from the final showdown scene. You can also compare the rendered version with that of the new cell shaded styled one.

Fruits of more free time

I haven’t exactly been working as much as I have been previously, so it’s allowed me to finally pump out a few more character studies. The first is the result of a little motivation project Andrew and I have cooked up for one another where we choose characters and elements of a fantasy universe to define in great detail then I illustrate. The time limit for each character is roughly three days from development to final rendering. Lets start with a short rundown of the universe and a bit of a rational for the characters outfit:

This would be the hero of the story we’re developing for our ‘character-project’. We narrowed it down to him being a new recruit aboard an airship – so this is kind of like a fantasy Moby Dick (though its only a small part of the story we’ll expand it as we go on). Our hero’s a relatively young man, obsessed with the typical cravings for adventure and riches – and what better way to do that than on board a flying ship hunting enormous airborn beasts for their magical organs? Since the airship spends most of its time at high altitudes hunting its prey, his clothing is a scraped together outfit to allow him to operate in the extreme cold and high winds. The ship that he’s working on features an intricate spiderweb of safety wires which allows the crew to navigate the open main deck with relative safety. Each crew member is outfitted with a heavy duty safety harness and a large supply of ropes and belay’s. Expect more of these very soon:

The next one is just a rendered alien scientist concept. He’s pretty physically weak so he has to roam about in his exo-skeleton armor/survival suit. This guy’s been prone to previous ‘incidents’ as seen by his cybernetic arm.

Sick…

Been totally out of it the past little while thanks to the latest strain of the common cold, so here’s a little look what i’ve been up to. First off there’s a final touched up version of the High Nuclear Noon poster that i’m finally getting around to uploading (if you want a copy drop me a line). The second is a little preview for what I’m working on at the moment.

I’ve also gotten Andrew and Simon (my roomate) to help come up with ideas for the Windego story so he may post some of that as well as that mini-project progresses.

Character Concepts and brainstorming…

I figured that since I’m wanting to be a character based illustrator i should start making some of my concepts to look finished. Here’s a dog-man with sparse fur which was subconsciously influenced by Joy Ang’s original character. More of these are on the way with hopefully a range of friendly and enemy creatures along with some human designs.

I’ve also gotten interested in the Algonquian myth of the wendigo and have been doing some sketches involving that. This was kind of tough considering the body type described in the myth heavily resembles that of the pale man from Pan’s Labyrinth. So in an attempt to push it further ill be doing things like contorting the body more and making his head more teethy. Also i’m trying to play with the whole distended stomach but push it more. More on this one soon purhaps.

On a side note, the gallery section should be up and running soon – lots of thanks to steve.
